Sawyers Story
Sawyer Huval is a 19-year-old artist from the Cecilia - Breaux Bridge area. From a very early age, Sawyer has been drawn to the concept of creating art. He was a part of the Talented Visual Arts program at Cecilia for eight years and loved every second of it. Sawyer says, "It was a place I could go to escape the real world and just create."
At 12 years old, in the 7th grade, Sawyer began painting. With the help of his parents, he gathered supplies such as an easel, paint brushes, and some paint tubes. He used a spare bedroom in his house as his "painting room" as he used to call it. At the time, Sawyer was very inspired by local artists in the area and the things that he was surrounded by in his small town.
When his uncle opened "CrossFit Atakapa" in the town of St. Martinville, Louisiana, he asked Sawyer if he would like to hang a few pieces of art in the gym. Of course, Sawyer gladly agreed. As quickly as the first piece went up, it came down and to the home of a patron. He continued bringing paintings to the gym, and they continued selling. At his young age, Sawyer was amazed that people took such a liking to his art.
At some point in the eighth grade, Sawyer decided to stop painting. To this day, Sawyer does not know the reason of why he chose to stop doing what he loved so much. The only explanation he can give is, "It's like the want and passion to create had completely left my body." His family and friends, and even the locals in his community were confused and although they attempted to encourage him, it was no avail. He went on to high school and had a fun time enjoying normal high school things such as homecoming, football games, and parties. During this time, people would always ask him why he choose to stop painting -- he could never give an actual answer, because he did not know the answer himself.
Sawyer graduated high school in May of 2024. The summer after he graduated, he was sitting in a restaurant in Texas and saw a painting of a buffalo hanging on the wall. As he was taking bits of his salad, Sawyer felt a deep inspiration within him to start doing what he loved again, PAINTING! Before he said anything to anyone, he thought on it for about a week. When he finally decided to tell his family and friends, they were ecstatic. Now that Sawyer decided that he wanted to paint again, he knew that he needed to announce it to everyone in some way. He decided to make it Facebook official with a post to let everyone know that he was going back to what he originally loved, which was art. This post was received well, which was conformation that he was on the right path.
In December of 2024, Sawyer debuted at the Breaux Bridge Christmas Artwalk Downtown. His second show was at the 2025 Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival. His most recently participated in Tinsel and Treasures in Lafayette. Sawyer plans to continue to do as many shows as he can with the hopes of sharing his talent with everyone.
Each piece is created from his heart. Whether it be inspiration, memories, connections, friends & family or communities, his vibrant use of color is the most emotional element of his work.
Sawyer's ultimate goal in his art career is to open a Gallery.
The King of Color
"Every time I sit behind the easel in front of a blank canvas, pallet knife in hand, the world almost stops as I know it. I feel a unique blend of excitement and anxiousness. As the specific colors blend and work together to form a special piece of art, I feel an instant connection. It's as if the painting is a mirror, reflecting not only what I see but also what I am feeling.
With every painting that I paint, my passion intensifies, driving me to push boundaries and explore new depths. Once the painting is finished, I feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that a piece of my heart will now be out in the world for anyone and everyone to see."
